Laax - Introduction

On a hillside above the river some 18km west of Chur, the winter and summer resort of Laax - Flims is well known to the Swiss, who consistently pack the place out every season, but is virtually unknown outside the country. Flims, Laax and Falera all share the extensive “Alpine Arena” ski region, centred on the Crap Sogn Gion mountain (2228m), accessed by a cable-car from Laax-Murschetgon the edge of Laax village, and the Cassons Grat (2634m), served by a combination of chairlifts and a cable-car from Flims-Dorf. Falera has a chairlift to Curnius, halfway up the Crap Sogn Gion. Beginners and intermediates are best served by the range of skiing on offer at Flims-Laax.
Skiing

Snowboarding
Park and Pipe Crap Sogn Gion (2228 meters) has two monsterpipes, a snowboarding park with a park lift and a boardercross/skicross track. Park and Pipe Vorab has a monsterpipe, a halfpipe, 1 kickerline, 1 railline and 10 rails there's plenty to keep you busy if the Park and Pipe Crap Sogn Gion is feeling too crowded. Monsterpipe Crap Lang is definitely for the experienced boarder, whilst the Monsterpipe Crap Kurz is ideal for pipe beginners. The Snowboarding park Crap contains 2 halfpipes, 1 kicker line and 3 raillines with about 20 rails, rainbow-rails, straight-rails, A-rails, kink-box, straight-boxes, S-boxes, C-boxes, and a wall. The Boardercross on the Crap Sogn Gion is 600 meters and contains tables, steep curves, double jumps, large moguls, bumps and dips. From the Café No Name which is directly above the park, there is a perfect view of the whole park.Some favorite runs are the Vorab-Sattel-Ruschein (a 7 km long challenge); Alp Ruschein, Plaun and Crap Ault (both offering plenty of jumps). Or, for great powder-snow, head towards the vast snowfields of Cassons or Masegn (towards Ruschein)
Ski Schools
Courses provided at the ski school are geared to moving both beginners as well as experienced and advanced skiers of every age group on. There are half-day and full-day courses for beginners and 3 to 5-day blocks in groups or private sessions for the advanced.Beginners - children and adults Younger visitors start their skiing careers very gently in the children’s area, the kingdom of the funny little mascot, “Snowli”. After two trial lessons, you can decide how you want to proceed and for how long – with half and whole-day courses including or excluding lunch. Never fear: even if you long since outgrew your child’s ski boots, we’ll find a suitable beginners course for you.
Eating Out
The Laax area enjoys a fair range of 17 reasonably priced restaurants offering both regional and international cuisine and fine dining. Popular restaurants include the Posta Veglia, highly recommended for traditional Swiss cooking with a two-Michelin-fork rating, whilst the restaurant at the Hotel Des Alpes offers affordable daily menus starting at less than €10 for three courses. Pizza fans should head to the Pizzeria Pomodoro. just outside Laax is Sagogn, about 2.5 km from the village, where a rare dining treat can be found at Da Veraguth Carnetg, which has been awarded a Michelin star, and offers dining in an elegant rustic setting. Be advised, meals cost about €65–€85, and reservations are needed well in advance.
Other excellent, yet affordable restaurants in Laax-Murschetg include the Hotel Laaxerhof and Sporthotel Signina, with prices starting at about €13, making eating out in Laax a pleasant, and relatively cheap experience.
Bars and clubs
Laax enjoys a brilliant, vibrant apres-ski reputation. Places of note include The Camona, which recreates the big city disco atmosphere, whilst the nearby Casa Veglia is somewhat calmer and popular with the slightly older. The younger set usually head to the basement of the Rider’s Palace, which, like the Crap Bar, and Granite Bar, is a popular place amongst the boarders, although prices are slightly expensive at around €7 a beer.
Off the slopes
The traditional and historic town of Laax has a few other activities aside from skiing, with restaurants, hotels, a sports center and a museum based around the lake. Outdoor heated swimming, ice skating and tennis is also available.
